A quick video recap shows us how Linda won the title shot at Climax, as well as how Paul James captured the Defiance Championship in a triple threat. From there, we go back to ringside.
John: The following match is scheduled for one fall to a finish and is for the SVW Defiance Championship!!!
Dante: Linda’s been chasing a championship in SVW for a long time, tonight’s her biggest opportunity to do it. And I mean biggest in every sense of the word.
PUT ON YOUR WAR PAINT
“The Phoenix” plays over the PA system, signalling to the fans that Linda Ragnal is on her way out. Once the blonde woman walks out, she waves to the fans before standing at the center of the stage, pointing her finger up before the screen displays a blue phoenix on it. Following that Linda walks down the ramp, slapping hands with the fans.
John: Making her way to the ring, hailing from Manhattan, New York by way of Scranton, PA...she is the Water Born Phoenix...LINDA! RAGNAL!
Linda rolls into the ring under the ropes, standing up as she clears them. She stands on the turnbuckles, planting two fingers against her lips before pointing them out to the crowd. Linda tosses her hat out to the audience as well before hopping off the turnbuckles and waiting for her opponent.
Melissa: Linda Ragnal proved she can take down opponents bigger than her when she defeated Gary Gilray at Climax, but SVW doesn’t have anyone bigger than the Defiance Champion.
Dante: Ain’t that the truth! I’m not saying she can’t do it. I’m positive she has the skills. I’m just not sure she will do it, if that makes sense.
“Spit shine” by Xzibit starts to play out from the PA with thick bass and the monstrous black man shows up wearing all black, with the Defiance Championship on his shoulder. He made his way down to the ring with heavy steps, rubbing his palms together a hint of smirk across his face.
John: On his way to the ring standing 6’6 tall weighing 450 pounds The Fat Cheetah, Paul James!
Melissa: I think Paul James was a dark horse pick for capturing the Defiance title, since most of the talk heading into that was Shane and Rhea. But he’s the man packing the gold, which is what matters.
Dante: As far as I’m concerned, I’m not sure there’s anyone who is going to take it from him. No offense to Linda, but I think the Cheetah is gonna keep that title as long as he so desires.
The defending champion handed the title belt off to referee Billy Phelps who showed the title to Linda and then held it aloft for the crowd to see before he passed it to a ringside attendant. The official checked that both competitors were ready to start the match and called for the bell. The two wrestlers came out of their corners and moved towards the middle of the ring, where they got into a collar and elbow tie up that saw the Cheetah use his size advantage to force Linda all the way back to the corner. Phelps stepped in and called for the break, Paul James holding his hands up as he let go while Ragnal stayed in the corner for a moment before coming forward and once more the two locked up in a collar and elbow tie up, pushing Linda backwards into her corner once more. Again the referee got the clean break and again James backed up to the middle of the ring. Ragnal came forward once more with a shake of her head, not backing down as she again entered into a tie up with the big man. This time as he started to force her backwards, Linda surprised him with an armdrag that sent him rolling to the corner himself this time.
Melissa: I’m not sure how she did it, but she put him down. But he’s already getting back to his feet. Linda better find a way to keep him down if she wants a good shot at winning.
James came straight up to his feet only to be caught in the chest with a standing dropkick from his opponent; the blonde immediately rolling backwards and popping back up to her feet to charge towards him once more, leaving her feet again to slam a high knee into his chest. James wobbled and took a step backwards into the corner where Linda continued her offence as she backed up to the middle of the ring and exploded forward once again to catch the champion with a flying forearm to the jaw in the corner. Landing on her feet Ragnal took two steps backwards, measuring up James as she did so and left her feet once more as she caught him with a perfect dropsault that planted one foot in his chest as the over delivered a blow to his jawline.
Melissa: Linda’s unloading with the heavy offense, and using her biggest attribute in this match: speed.
Dante: But the problem is she hasn’t put him on the mat, she must feel like she’s fighting a brick wall.
Again Linda backed up on landing only to charge forward one more time and catch the Fat Cheetah with a running knee to the gut that she followed up with a series of side kicks to his stomach, holding the top rope as she delivered them, only stopping when Billy Phelps count reached four. James leaned forward slightly following the assault on his gut and Linda immediately wrenched in a headlock before she attempted to pull him away from the corner with a bulldog only for James to shove her off him and across the ring. The Water Born Phoenix landed on her feet and stumbled forward three steps before she turned around and found Paul James already on top of her as he mowed her down with a clothesline. Ragnal quickly tried to rise to her feet only for the Defiance Champion to catch her wrist and jerk forwards into a belly to belly slam.
Dante: Look at all the work Linda did just trying to get him down, and all it took was one shot from the Cheetah to do the same!
Melissa: I don’t think Linda’s ever been in the ring with someone the size of the Cheetah, but tonight she’s getting one hell of a crash course on what it’s like.
The girl from Scranton rolled away and tried to get to her feet as Paul rose to his and the Cheetah dropped back to the ring ropes and came towards the blonde, catching her with a shoulder block that saw her sent backwards to the mat, her head bouncing off the canvas as she landed. Ragnal started to rise to her feet, holding the back of her head and Paul James sent her in for the ride, Irish whipping her into the far corner and immediately sent off behind her, catching her a moment after she connected back first with the turnbuckles with a corner clothesline. Linda held her chest as she staggered out of the corner and the Defiance Champion came off the ropes behind her and drove her face first into the canvas with a one handed bulldog. Linda rolled onto her back and the Fat Cheetah placed his hands on her shoulders for the pinfall.
One…
Two…
Melissa: Near fall for the champion. What kind of training do you think Linda went through to get ready for this match?
Dante: I don’t know who trains her, but they better have worked on speed drills and endurance. Her best hope is to make this match go long against a much larger opponent.
Ragnal kicked out of the two count and rolled to the side only as James followed her, applying a front facelock that he kept locked in tight as he brought her up to her feet with him. Once they were both vertical, he took a moment then lifted Ragnal up and over with a snap suplex. Linda rolled away once more and tried to rise only to find James up and vertical already as he sent her back down to the mat with a hip toss and followed it up straight away with a leg drop across her chest. The Defiance Champion rolled away to his feet as Ragnal held her chest and started to rise getting as far as her knees before James began to deliver clubbing forearms down across the top of her shoulders. He landed four shots before he pulled her up to her feet and whipped her into the ring ropes, catching her on the return with a dropkick to her chest that sent her back to the canvas. Once more the Water Born Phoenix rolled away and tried to rise to her feet but again only got as far as her knees before she was on the receiving end of a running boot to the face from the Fat Cheetah. As she collapsed back to the mat, the powerhouse wrestler made the cover on the blonde.
Melissa: A jaw rattling boot to the face, and Linda may be out right now!
One…
Two…
Dante: You gotta give Linda credit for even being conscious after a shot like that, much less kicking out.
As Billy Phelps completed the two count, Linda kicked out again, James nodding his head in acceptance of the count by the referee as he pushed up to his feet, pulling the challenger up with him. He delivered two forearm blows across her shoulders before he scooped her up off her feet and onto his shoulder, walking around the ring with her for a moment before he took three quick steps forward and drove her back first into the mat with a powerslam. Linda arched her back upwards as her face became a mask of pain before she fell back to the mat as Paul James returned to his feet. The big man measured Ragnal up before he took off across the ring, hitting the ropes and left his feet upon his return for a jumping splash...and got nothing but mat as Linda rolled away at the last second.
Dante: Excellent presence of mind for LInda there. That splash would have spelled ultimate doom for her if she hadn’t moved.
Melissa: She’s not out of the woods yet though.
The blonde pulled herself upwards using the ring ropes, facing Paul James and immediately unloaded on him with a series of stiff kicks to his body and legs as he rose, finishing it off with a roundhouse kick to the side of his head. Paul took a half step backwards and Ragnal made the most of the opening by skipping forward and driving her foot into his middle before she grabbed his head, pulling him downwards into a single knee facebuster. The Fat Cheetah staggered backwards, holding his face before he finally regained his bearings and with a flash of anger on his face he charged her. Linda timed it perfectly as she left her feet and caught the onrushing man with a low dropkick to the knee that took the leg out from under him and saw him face plant on the canvas. Instantly the bigger wrestler tried to push back up to his hands and knees and Linda left her feet with a double footstomp into his shoulder blades sending him back to the mat once more. Again the Defiance Champion started to push upwards, Ragnal letting him get to one knee before she hooked his head and took him down to the mat once more with a swinging neckbreaker. She immediately made the cover, reaching to try and hook his leg.
One…
Two…
...T
Melissa: That’s a lot of leg to have to hook if you’re the challenger, and it wasn’t enough to seal the deal anyway.
Dante: In all the years he’s been in SVW, you can count on one hand the number of people who have pinned him. And I’m pretty sure you have fingers left over at that.
Paul kicked out with authority, sending Linda rolling away from him. As the Defiance Champion returned to one knee, the blonde was back on her feet and moved towards him quickly, grabbing hold of his head and bulldogged him back into the mat. Again the Scranton born wrestler was quick to her feet and quickly circled around the rising powerhouse, leaping onto his back and wrapping her legs around his torso for a bodyscissors as her arms snaked around his head locking in a sleeper hold. Linda adjusted her position to use all of her 180lbs of bodyweight to try and keep the 450lb Cheetah on his hands and knees while making the sleeper hold as effective as possible. Phelps dropped down besides the Defiance Champion, checking the legality of the hold before he asked Paul if he wanted to quit, getting a no from the powerhouse who tried to pull Linda’s arms away from him but found that she had a vice like grip.
Dante: I don’t recall anyone ever making the Cheetah quit, but credit to the challenger for doing her best.
Melissa: This is how she wore down Gilray. If it worked once, it very well could again. Gary’s also had his share of problems with the Defiance Champion.
As the blonde tightened her legs around his body in an effort to prevent him from drawing in full breaths and did everything that she could to exert further pressure with her arms in the sleeper hold, Paul James began to rise, slowly pushing up to his knees. He continued to rise to one knee, pausing for a couple of moments to pull at Linda’s arms once more before he attempted to push up to a vertical base only to drop back down to one knee, hand reaching out to the canvas to steady himself as the hold was taking it’s toll on him. Paul found his balance and once again made an effort to rise - this time succeeding in getting his feet underneath him, staggering a couple of steps as Phelps checked on him, the camera zooming in and finding that his eyelids seemed to be getting heavy, blinking closed a couple of times. He slapped his chest with both hands in an effort to rouse himself and started to move backwards, building up speed as he drove Linda back first into the turnbuckles and getting him the release.
Melissa: Linda must feel like she got ran over by a Zamboni machine the way Paul squashed her into the corner like that.
Dante: She should have let go sooner, but she was hoping...I guess…..he’d pass out even when he was trying to get up.
James stepped forward as her arms and legs unfurled from around him, taking big deep breaths as he tottered towards the middle of the ring only to turn around and charge towards Linda, running face first straight into her boots. The Cheetah staggered backwards and Ragnal quickly climbed up the inside of the turnbuckles and dove off into a missile dropkick straight into his chest that caused him to collapse back to the canvas. Linda rolled to the side as Paul started to get to his feet and she charged towards him, springboarding off the ropes and launching herself towards him, catching him around the head and dropping him on his head with a Tornado DDT. As fast as she could she rolled the bigger man onto his back and again made the cover on him.
One…
Two…
...THR-
Melissa: Linda feels like she’s trying to turn over a Buick, but the big man kicked out.
Dante: Another thing I’d have her done is flipping tires on tractor trailers, just to prepare for moments like that.
James kicked out of the pinfall and rolled to the side, pushing up to his hands and knees as Ragnal asked Phelps to confirm the count and got shown the two count. The Water Born Phoenix nodded in acceptance and came to her feet, taking a second to watch the Defiance Champion push upwards and get to his knees before she stepped into him and drove three quick knees into his face, going for a fourth only to find herself caught as James lifted her up as he rose to his feet, lifting her over his head for a Gorilla Press slam only for the Manhattan resident to kick her feet and twist her body to escape his clutches, landing on her feet behind him. As he turned around she leapt up, grabbing his head and jerking him down into a jawbreaker, landing on her knees. James staggered backwards, falling into the corner and Linda came forward quickly, stepping up onto the middle rope and swung her foot towards the side of his head for an enzuigiri that missed as the big man ducked down and darted past her. Ragnal spun to face him and right into his clutches; the powerhouse lifting her upwards and spiking her down into the mat with a vicious uranage that saw her bounce off the mat as she landed.
Dante: Beautiful uranage suplex that almost sent Linda into orbit if Paul didn’t have his arm across her!
Melissa: That’s the thing about him. A guy that size, you don’t expect much technical skill. But he knows his stuff, and it makes him even more dangerous.
Paul James took a couple of steps backwards, holding a hand against his head as he tried to recover from the onslaught. Meanwhile the Water Born Phoenix rolled onto her front and reached for the ropes, slowly using them to pull herself back to her feet with her back to her opponent. Pushing away from the ropes she walked around in a small circle and straight into a spinning backfist from her foe that saw her fall back into the ropes, bouncing off them and straight into a bearhug. James wasted little time in lifting her off her feet and shaking her from side to side like a rag doll as he tightened his arms around her, squeezing the life from her. Phelps asked her if she wanted to quit and got a ‘No’ that turned into a squeal of pain as the Fat Cheetah flexed and tightened his grip on her further before he gave her another shake that saw her slump against him.
Melissa: Can you imagine what that must feel like, Dante? Look at her being shaken like a leaf with ease!
Dante: I’m not sure he’ll get her to tap out, but he may well cause her to pass out. When you can’t breathe and get oxygen to your brain, the lights can go out in a hurry.
Billy Phelps asked her once more if she wished to quit and this time got a much quieter, whispered ‘No’ as she was struggling for breath, all the air being squeezed out of her body thanks to the 6’6 450lb powerhouse of a Defiance Champion. He squeezed a little tighter and still she refused to quit. Somehow Paul James managed to tighten his Boa-Constrictor like grip even further around her midsection. Phelps asked the question asked and when he got no answer from the blonde he lifted her arm and watched it drop lifelessly. He lifted it again and watched it fall. He lifted it a third time, checking for any sort of life as he kept it aloft for a moment.
Melissa: One last time, and the Cheetah has successfully retained his Defiance Championship here tonight at Rampage!
As he released her wrist, Linda’s arm dropped halfway, wavered and then started to rise in the air, getting roar from her fans in the crowd. Her other arm rose in the air to join the first as she seemed to find a second wind, leaning back in Paul James’ arms she drove the sides of her hands downwards into his trapezius for matching kesagiri chops. She repeated the move once more and Paul seemed to loosen his grip slightly and Linda bell clapped her hands together against his ears once, twice, three times before he finally dropped her to the mat. Ragnal landed on her feet and instantly started going to town on his leg, snapping off stiff kicks into his thigh and the side of his knee connecting with four blows before James shot out his hands, gripped her around the throat and in one motion lifted her upwards and slammed her down with a two handed chokeslam, falling to his knees as he drove her back first into the mat. He took a second to reach for his leg before he crawled forward and threw himself over her to make the cover.
Melissa: Holy…!! A double handed chokeslam, and James is retaining his title!
One…
Two…
...THRE-
Dante: I legit don’t know where she’s finding this to keep coming back, but...here we are!
Ragnal rolled the shoulder at the final moment, Paul James rolling off her and to a sitting position as he saw Phelps displaying the two count. The Fat Cheetah looked down at the Water Born Phoenix who had curled up on the canvas, holding her back in pain and held three fingers up to the official who shook his head, telling him that it was only two and the shoulder came up in the nick of time. Paul nodded his head and slowly rose to his feet, pulling Linda to her feet with him before he set her up into position for a powerbomb. As he flipped her up onto his shoulders, Linda came to life, peppering his skull with machine gun like right and left hands that caused him to lose his grip on her as he moved towards the middle of the ring, allowing her to push up and slide down his back before she attempted to pull him into a sunset flip. The tall man teetered and tottered as she pulled at his legs on the verge of falling backwards into the pinfall, fighting it all the way and finally finding his balance at which point he countered the move by dropping all his weight down onto Ragnal chest as he sat down.
Dante: That….that was stupid. There is no way you should ever try a sunset flip on a guy like the Cheetah, especially at Linda’s size!
Melissa: She may have thought she had the leverage, but gravity won in the end! Linda may have bruised ribs!
But only got mat, Linda telegraphing the counter and rolled away at the very last second. The challenger forced herself to come to her feet as Paul pressed a hand to the small of his back in absolute agony and she took off across the ring, hitting the ring ropes and came back to deliver another double foot stomp - this time straight into his chest, driving him back down against the canvas. Linda didn’t waste any time, setting off towards the ropes once more and delivering the Tidal Wave rolling thunder senton to the prone champion. She didn’t stop there as she rolled out of the ring underneath the bottom rope and scrambled back to her feet, taking hold of the top rope as she measured up Paul James for just a second before she came crash down on top of him once more with a slingshot senton. Immediately Linda rolled over and made the cover, just about managing to hook his leg as she did so.
One…
Two…
...THRE-
Dante: Another near fall for Linda, she’s trying to build a rally here. But it takes so much just to hook one of those massive legs!
Paul James rolled his shoulder to escape the hold and as he did so Linda instantly transitioned from the pin attempt into the Eel Wrap anaonda vice, trapping and bending his arm backwards over his shoulder as she looked for the submission. Phelps asked Paul James if he wanted to quit and got a definite ‘No’ from the Cheetah as he gritted his teeth thanks to Linda increasing the torque on the hold. Phelps asked again and got another no as Paul began to roll to the side and push his way upwards, Linda holding the tightly applied submission and putting all her weight behind the hold. The man kicked his foot against the mat as he made it to his knees, grimacing in pain before he started to push upwards to one knee before he fired off three stiff closed fists into her side that made Linda let out a small cry of pain. He delivered a fourth shot right beneath her ribs that saw her take a half step backwards and as she did he used all of his power to explode up to his feet and shove her backwards and out of the hold into the ropes.
Dante: When he shoves you like that, it’s gotta feel like you were shot out of a cannon! Linda damn near went through the ropes.
He shook off the arm that had been locked in the submission and as he did Linda skipped forward and caught him square in the chest with a superkick. Paul staggered backwards, holding his chest and Ragnal moved around behind him, quickly capturing his arms into something that could be generously described as a Full Nelson (given the size difference) and then swept his feet out from under him causing him to faceplant as she complete the Tribute To UC. Once more Linda managed to roll him over to his back and hook his leg as she made the cover on him.
One…
Two…
...THREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Melissa: TRIBUTE TO THE UC, but the Cheetah….he’s still got more left in the tank!
Dante: Linda needs to hit something big, and do it quickly! She doesn’t want him getting up again at all!
At the very last moment the Defiance Champion’s shoulder popped up off the mat, Phelps calling the two count immediately. As the official confirmed it with Linda, the blonde shook her head in disbelief at the official asking for the three count but getting the two confirmed to once more. Rolling away to the side, Linda forced herself to her feet and leaned against the ropes, holding her back as she gave a sign to the crowd and waved Paul upwards to his feet. She watched as the Defiance Champion rose to his feet, circling around behind him and as soon as he got upright she launched herself towards him, locking in the sleeper hold and instantly trying to transition it into the lungblower to complete the Oceanic Rose Driver. The Fat Cheetah had it scouted, however, leaning forward and reaching behind him as she tried to jerk him backwards, he managed to grab hold of her and flip her over his head and to the mat in the front of him, dropping to one knee as he did so. Linda rolled as she landed and came straight to her feet and, seemingly sensing victory was at had went to press home her advantage. She charged towards the Defiance Champion who exploded towards her with surprising quickness and caught her with a lariat that saw her flip in the air and land hard on the mat in a heap.
Dante: Is Cirque du Soleil in town?! Because Linda just auditioned for them with that flip she cut, courtesy of the the Defiance Champion!
Melissa: Check the fourth row, because that may be where her head is! Jesus!
Paul James stopped before he hit the corner and cast a quick glance over his shoulder as he saw Linda folded up on the mat and he slapped the top turnbuckle pad before he began to climb. He reached the middle rope as Ragnal made it to all fours and pressed on to the top, taking a moment to find his balance and look between his legs to measure up Linda. Ragnal just managed to get her feet underneath her when Paul James launched himself from the top rope and into a moonsault that caught her perfectly and saw him land on top of her on the canvas before he rolled away. James pushed up slowly to his feet and as Linda made it to her knees he caught her with a vicious knee to her jaw. He swiped at the air like a big cat clawing at its prey getting a cheer from the crowd as he pulled Linda to her feet. As soon as she was vertical he hurled her into the ropes before setting off himself and caught her with Do Da Pounce. Linda immediately collapsed to the canvas, head bouncing off the mat and Paul James rolled her onto her back and hooked her leg for the cover.
Melissa: POOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUNNCCEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
One…
Two…
...THREE!!!!!!!
Dante: I knew it would be over after that! The Fat Cheetah has done it again, and proven what we’ve been saying all along!
Billy Phelps called for the bell and as it rang Paul James slowly pushed himself back up onto his knees, while the referee retrieved the SVW Defiance Championship.
John: Here is your winner by way of pinfall...and STILL SVW DEFIANCE CHAMPION…”FAT CHEETAH” PAUL JAMES!!!!
Melissa: I don’t think there’s one man or woman in SVW who is gonna be able to take that big man down, much less take his Defiance Championship!
Dante: Maybe not one, but….hang on a minute!!
The official helped the victor rise from one knee to his feet and held his hand alot as he presented him with the title belt. Paul took the title off the referee and held it aloft, getting cheered loudly by the crowd. He moved towards the corner near the entrance ramp and held the title aloft, getting cheered once more by the crowd before he spotted movement out of the corner of his eye; dropping to the mat and staring as Qilin was walking down the ramp, climbing her hands wildly.
Dante: I was wondering when they would show up! I thought maybe Sunny would be trying to recuperate after her match with Shane earlier, but….
As he watched Sunny’s herald stroll down towards the ring, Kanna slid into the ring behind him and drove Mercy into the small of his back. The Fat Cheetah’s back arched as he took two ginger steps forward and Kanna delivered another shot into his back with the barbed wire covered baseball bat only for Paul James to spin around and catch her with a spinning backfist to the jaw that caused her to drop her bat and stumble backwards. Before he could follow up, he was jumped by both members of Blood and Flames who had come through either side of the crowd and were now both laying into his legs with rapid fire stiff kicks, trying to hack him down only for him to lunge to one side, catching Arisu with a forearm smash to the jaw, followed by a second before she grabbed hold of her head between both his hands and spun her around, throwing her towards Fuma.
Melissa: Paul James is a ONE MAN WRECKING CREW! He’s taking on the Worthy by himself, and Arisu just got thrown into her husband!
Dante: This is amazing! I think Sunny may have picked a fight with the one man who can face down the Worthy! I….spoke too soon!
He turned again and again found himself attacked as Kanna darted forward, driving a boot into his stomach, followed by another to his groin before she spun him around to Gouken who lifted him upwards and drove him down with a falling powerbomb, only to pick him straight back up and pass him to his sister who used the momentum to her advantage and drove him head first into the mat with a pulling piledriver as Sunny entered the ring. Once more Gouken pulled him upright and held him as Sunny smiled at Paul and delivered a Kick Super into his jaw while Blood and Flames drove rapid fire stiff kicks into his midsection. Sunny gave a sign to the crowd for the Alakazam; Gouken pushing Paul forward onto his knees as Sunny measured him up and made for the ropes only for the crowd to start cheering wildly as Shane Atwater and Ryan Sheffield were sprinting towards the ring with steel chairs in hand.
Melissa: This is a mugging, the numbers game caught up with the Cheetah! And--
Dante: Well maybe the numbers aren’t gonna be as bad after all, here comes Ryan Sheffield! And he brought some steel!
Fuma and Kanna slid out to stop them, only for Ryan to drive the edge of his chair deep into Kanna’s gut before he brought it down across her back, whilst Atwater swung for Fuma’s head, the masked man ducking underneath it only to get a kick to the gut and a snap DDT sending him suddenly into the steel of the entrance ramp. Ryan slid into the ring as Sunny completed the Alakazam and found Arisu Mitsuhide charging towards him only for him to drop his shoulder and send her over the top rope before he got a big boot to the face from Gouken that saw him fall back against the ropes as Atwater slid in and caught the Haroshi sibling square across the back with a vicious chair shot, followed by a second and a third as Ryan moved out of his corner and moved to cut off Sunny before she could jump Shane, swinging a chair for her skull that saw her throw herself into a baseball slide to avoid as she left the ring. Ryan turned back around to see Gouken who had been on the back foot, swing a fist towards Atwater, connecting with the chair and taking it out of his hands. Sheffield charged forward and left his feet, launching himself towards Gouken and caught him with a huge chair shot to the face and upper body that saw the masked Japanese wrestler stumble and fall backwards over the top rope, landing on his feet on the floor.
Melissa: Shane’s not done with the Worthy either! Go ahead, Gouken! Go get you some!
Dante: The Worthy are causing what is essentially a gang war! And the sides are starting to even up tonight! Paul keeps the title, but the Worthy are swarming because Sunny wants it for herself!
Gouken immediately reached for the top rope and looked to pull himself upwards only for Atwater to deliver a pendulum dropkick through the ropes to him, sending him back into the barricade where Kanna and Qilin quickly joined him and moved him away from the ring as the Worthy regrouped on the entrance ramp. Ryan checked on Paul James who was starting to recover in the ring; as Shane watched the slowly departing faction, giving Sunny in particular a death stare as the show cut elsewhere.
We see footage of the history dating back to War Games between Misty Whitmore and Luther Thunder, and is capped off by Alexander Stryfe’s announcement at Climax making tonight’s match for a shot at the SVW Championship. From there, we head back to ringside with John waiting in the ring.
John: The following contest is scheduled for one fall, and the winner will earn a SVW Championship match!
Melissa: You want to talk about a match a long time coming? That’s what we got coming up here, and the prize couldn’t be any bigger.
Dante: I’m very curious to see how, if at all, Luther has changed. We haven’t seen him since he was Buried Alive in the Match of the Year voted on by SVW fans.
We hear a thunderclap, signifying the start of “The Man Comes Around” by Johnny Cash. As the acoustic guitar and the hypnotic words of the man in black fill the arena, the lights go out, and in a sole spotlight we see the slow walk out of Luther Thunder, flanked by Esme & his sister Tara, all in black. Luther bows his head, and makes the sign of the cross on his chest, before linking arms with the two ladies and walking down the ramp towards the ring, the spotlight following.
John: Introducing from Amsterdam in the Netherlands, accompanied by Esme and Tara Thunder standing 6’6” tall and weighing 270 lbs, he is...LUTHER THUNDER!!!
Luther gets to ringside, where he releases from the ladies, climbing the steps to the apron. He blesses the ring, bowing his head, before climbing atop the turnbuckle. He throws his arms out like a crucifix, and then slowly starts asking the Lord to forgive these sinners who boo him.
Melissa: I can’t see much in the way of physical changes, but it’s not like nutjobs always look the part.
Dante: I don’t care if he doesn’t look different. Something like that has to change you, and I suspect we are about to see a much more dangerous Luther than ever before.
The music starts, as the crowd quiets. A spotlight appears at the top of the ramp…but after a few moments nobody shows. The spotlight starts combing the arena, followed by another spotlight, and a third as the song starts.
Paranoia is in bloom,
The PR, transmissions will resume
They'll try to, push drugs that keep us all dumbed down
And hope that, we will never see the truth around
(So come on!)
The spotlights race around for a moment until one finally stops in the middle of the crowd, revealing Misty standing amongst the fans. She raises her fist with a cry and a grin as the fans nearby cheer and do the same.
John: Hailing from Toronto, Ontario Canada. The Voice of the People....MISTY WHITMORE!!!
The young wrestler then makes a B-line for the ring, slapping hands of fans before hopping the barricade. Misty climbs onto the ring apron and looks out at the crowd, holding a hand over her brow with a grin. Leaping over the top rope Misty runs to the opposite corner, climbing up the corner and singing out the chorus with the fans, raising her fist with every phrase.
They will not force us!
They will stop degrading us!
They will not control us!
We will be victorious!
So come on!
Misty jumps down from the corner, fists raised and ready for the match.
Melissa: Misty Whitmore has one hell of a massive challenge ahead of her if she wants to step back into line for a SVW Championship match.
Dante: Misty tends to thrive on challenges though. I’m sure she’s not worried too much about a new Luther, because she’s going to give him her full focus no matter what.
Referee Angela Rocca calls for the bell to start the match as Luther stares across at the former gymnast. Misty looks out over the crowd with a deep breath, listening to them already chanting and cheering for her. It brings a smile to her face before Luther waves her forward as he walks out of the corner. Misty darts towards him as he tries to grab her, but she ducks underneath him. A rebound off the near side ropes behind him allows her to connect with a chop block to the back of his knee. It stumbled him forward as Whitmore stayed behind him, and immediately began firing kicks into his left knee repeatedly till he fell to that knee. The crowd only got louder as Misty bounced off the ropes a second time when he got to his feet, and connected with a diving clothesline to the back of his knee. The big man lurched forward to the mat before Whitmore grabbed his left foot off the canvas, and repeatedly spiked his knee into the mat.
Melissa: Misty’s coming right out of the gate with a burst of speed, and she’s already trying to bring Luther off his feet.
Dante: That’s very smart strategy. Misty’s not gonna be on an even playing field if she tries to take him head on, and she knows that as well as we do.
Luther rolled to his side, holding that knee before Misty hit the ropes again for a double stomp to it as well. She pulled his foot across the bottom rope before bouncing off the middle rope to drive her body weight down across it. Luther’s knee struck the canvas before Misty applied a stepover toehold after Luther rolled onto his back. She wasn’t able to hold it long though before the big man used his free foot to kick her in the chest to send her wobbling backwards. She regained her balance, and went right back at him again. But Luther had already gotten to his feet, and caught her with a big boot across the jaw as she came towards him. She collapsed to the mat, while he winced and rubbed his knee for a moment.
Melissa: That’s all it takes from Luther. Just one move like that, and he can change the whole direction of a match.
Dante: Misty had a wise strategy there, but she’s going to have to do a lot more to that knee to keep him down. He has powerful legs, and knows how to use them.
The Dutch Devil rubbed his knee once again, pulling Misty to her feet. He fired her across into the far corner, where she crashed back first. He followed her in (a bit slower than usual) with a corner clothesline. She would have fallen down, but he held her up by the chin and delivered a trio of elbows to the side of her head. The big man scooped her up high overhead, and launched her with a military press slam to the mat. He stalked towards her with a slight limp as she began to rise to her feet. He let her get up before grabbing her head, and burying a knee into her ribs to double her over in pain. Thunder scooped her up, and dropped her across his knee with a gutbuster before loosely hooking the outside leg for the cover.
ONE!
TWOOOOOO!!!
NOPE!!
Melissa: It’s almost like Luther is trying to show Misty all that work on his knee isn’t gonna stop him, because he’s been using it to batter her ever since.
Misty kicked out, and Luther punished her for it by driving his knee into her body repeatedly. He dragged her to her feet, letting her know she made a mistake before scooping her over one shoulder. The Amsterdam Assassin galloped out of the corner with a running powerslam, driving Misty’s back once again into the canvas. He glanced over to his sister at ringside, who was entirely focused on what was taking place. The big man pulled Misty back to her feet again, whipping her into the far corner with velocity. She struck back first, and he measured her for a second before taking off towards her with another big boot. But Misty dove out of the way, and he ended up clearing the top turnbuckle and getting his foot hung on the post.
Dante: That was miraculous timing by Misty! Luther got his foot hung on the ring post, and Misty MUST capitalize and quickly!
Melissa: I bet that knee won’t be as limber now! Look at his face, he may have torn a hamstring right there as well as his knee.
He tried to gently pull his leg back inside, and Misty immediately began firing kicks into the thigh rapidly. Each shot made the big man’s face freeze up. She stepped out onto the apron, grabbing his foot and jerking him forward to increase the pain before grabbing his foot and dropping down to the floor. It snapped his leg across the top rope, causing him to get free but also collapse onto the mat. The crowd began to get far louder now as Misty headed up to the top rope, and launched herself with a second double stomp, this time into his chest. It folded the big man in half before Misty took off for the far side, rebounding with a rolling senton and grabbing one leg for the cover in the process.
Melissa: Misty got him down off his feet, and she may be close to putting him away right now!
ONE!!!
TWOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
T-NOOOO!!
Thunder shoved her off the cover with both hands, causing the former gymnast to immediately get back to her feet. He tried to get up as well, but she quickly grabbed his foot, and applied a figure four leglock.
Dante: A figure four, that’s an interesting choice. I don’t know if Misty has the leg strength to make it work on a man the size of Luther Thunder, but she’s gonna give it her all!
Luther’s face was wracked with pain as Misty tried to get all the pressure she could out of the submission. She propped up on her elbows as Luther sat up, pain etched across his face. He took a few swipes at her, trying to grab her but she managed to stay out of his reach. Whitmore began to hammer fists into his knee, causing him more pain in the process before she laid back on the mat out of arm’s reach.
Melissa: She must be doing pretty well with it, Dante. Look at Luther’s face, his leg is in agony and Misty is staying well out of reach!
Dante: I sit corrected. She’s worked on that leg almost the entire match, but I don’t know if she’s going to get a submission out of Luther though. I can’t recall the last time he tapped out!
Rocca dropped down in front of Luther, asking him if he wanted to submit. But the big man clutched his hands to his head, bellowing a loud “No” to her. Misty began to pull on his leg now, causing even more pain as the referee checked again. When Misty laid back, Tara reached under the bottom rope and raked her eyes. It caused Misty to let go, and Luther kicked her off him after he got his leg free. Rocca spun around to see what happened as Tara had moved to her brother’s corner and stood quietly.
Melissa: Of course, it was Tara who made the save. I’d almost forgotten she was out here, but she certainly gave Luther the opening he needed.
Dante: That’s what she and Cesare are there to do, Melissa. They are his lackeys for all intents and purposes.
Misty started to get back to her feet, going right after Luther’s leg. But the big man caught her with a palm thrust to the neck as she approached, sending her backwards as he struggled to get to his feet. Misty took off for the near side, and rebounded quickly...only to run right into Luther’s hand. He hoisted her up, and dropped her with a chokeslam. The big man winced in pain as he had put all his weight back on the bad leg so quickly. When he saw Misty starting to rise seconds later, he surprised her with a scissor kick that planted her on the mat. The big man quickly dropped to make a cover as Rocca slid into position to count.
Dante: That scissor kick may have knocked Misty out, and it certainly didn’t do that left knee any favors. Whitmore’s had a brilliant strategy, but it’s not looking like it’ll pay off!
ONE!!!!
TWOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
THRE-NOPE!!!
Misty got her shoulder up in time before the three, and Luther used his good leg to rain down on her head and body repeatedly. He slowly made it back to his feet, an angry sneer on his face as he looked down to her.
Melissa: Luther’s face tells you all you need to know. He’s got nothing but bad intentions in mind for Misty, and he’d like to be done sooner than later with that leg no doubt hurting.
Thunder pulled her to her feet, and planted her head between his legs. He hoisted her up for what looked to be his powerbomb, but Misty countered! She sat on his shoulders, and unloaded with furious right hands that sent him stumbling backwards. That was followed up by a massive hurricanrana that spiked the big man on his head before Misty grabbed both feet for a rollup! The crowd came to life again as Rocca dove to count.
Melissa: The biggest hurricanrana in Misty’s career, and she’s gonna take it! Misty’s getting a title shot!
ONE!!!
TWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
THREEEEEEEEEEE-NOPE!!
Luther kicked out, rolling Misty backwards off the rollup attempt. She got back to her feet, and headed for the corner immediately. With the crowd solidly behind her, she watched him try to get up. When he faced her, she dove off with a blockbuster! Whitmore dove on top of him for the cover again!
Dante: Blockbuster from the top! Misty’s going for it all once again!
ONE!!!
TWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
THREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-NOPE!!!
He kicked out again, and Misty immediately rolled off to the corner. She dropped to all fours, and began to pound her fists into the mat like a drum. It caused the live crowd to start stomping with her as she waited on Luther to get back to his feet.
Melissa: Oh Dante...we know what’s coming! The drums are sounding, and Misty Whitmore is looking to finish this!
Luther started back to his feet very slowly. When he was finally vertical, she bolted towards him. As soon as she got within range and left her feet, he caught her with a superkick to the jaw in midair that collapsed her to the canvas. He fell back down himself, grimacing in pain as he clutched his left knee.
Dante: THUNDERSTRUCK! Misty’s gotta be out cold!!
The big man rolled over, and went for a cover before Rocca slid into position to make the potential three count.
ONE!!!
TWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
THREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-NOPE!!
Misty’s shoulder came up just in the nick of time, and Luther glared a hole through the referee as she only held up two fingers.
Melissa: He took too long to make the cover! And Luther Thunder looks fit to be tied! I’m not sure he was expecting all this from Misty!
Dante: If he wasn’t, then he’s got what he deserved. You cannot ever count Misty out, especially in these big match situations.
The Amsterdam Assassin staggered to his feet, trying to get his left knee in order without much success. A sinister look on his face, he pulled Misty up and planted her head between his legs. He quickly hoisted her up, and immediately snapped her right back down with his crucifix powerbomb! The big man made a tight cover almost instantly as Rocca dropped to count.
Melissa: ASSASSIN’S EDGE!! I don’t think Misty is gonna be able to kick out this time!
ONE!!!
TWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
THREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
Dante: You’re right. I don’t think anyone was going to kick out of two of Luther’s favorite moves. And the Dutch Devil just got himself a shot at the SVW Championship!
He staggered to his feet, leaning against the ropes due to his leg. The referee raised his hand to a chorus of boos from the crowd as John made it official.
John: Here is your winner by pinfall……………..LUTHER THUNDER!!!
Tara joined him in the ring, as did Esme. Each of them raised his hand in victory as the big man shared a kiss with his exuberant wife.
Melissa: Take nothing away from Misty Whitmore, because she gave Luther everything he could have wanted….and a lot more he didn’t!
Dante: Misty left it all in the ring, but tonight it was just a case of too much to handle for her. Luther can go ice his knee down, and he’ll be watching the main event tonight very closely.
As his wife and sister helped him out of the ring to the floor, the show cut to a video spotlighting the upcoming SVW Draft.
The New Defiance Threat
The next image we see is that of Luci and her fiance, both of which are shown talking with the Uprising General Manager Cody Kincaid backstage. Vincent is shaking his hand as he speaks.
Vincent: Mr. Kincaid, allow me to join the others in congratulating you on your new position in charge of Uprising. While there were many fine….and some unique choices for the job, it’s clear SVW went with person who had the most experience in running things.
Luci: My fiance took the words out of my mouth. You had always done a wonderful job with FFW, no matter what was thrown at you and I can see for that reason alone why Mr. Stryfe chose you over several others, who all...varied in how suited they were for a job like this one. Congratulations. It’s certainly some of the better news I’ve heard in recent times.
Cody: Glad to have it. No one was more surprised than me honestly. I was sure either Lyn or Strike would get the job, they have far more background than I do in SVW after all.
Vincent: That they do, but an experienced person in a key position is worth their weight in gold. Plus one is now happily married and traveling, while Mr. Dallins has a fine job already that I’m sure is fulfilling for him. That said, I did want to discuss 2 things with you.
Cody: Shoot.
Cody folded his arms across his chest, and leaned against the wall as Vincent began.
Vincent: First, while I realize it isn’t entirely within your control, I would like to suggest and request that you draft Luci here to Uprising. I feel as though she would get a much fairer shake and opportunity under your guidance than is likely with someone like Mr. Kilmeade.
Luci watches as Vincent speaks, and then COdy for a moment to gauge his reaction, though doesn’t seem able to.
Luci: I thank you for that thought, my love. You are...certainly correct in some areas. Mr. Kilmeade does have his favourites and that could be detrimental as I am not likely to be one of them. However sometimes he can be more on the side of fair to those he does like. If you are able to have me, then that’s fine. If not, it’s a storm to weather and one I’m sure we’ll come out of in one piece.
Cody: Well as you know, I did give him the first two picks in the draft. And he hasn’t told me who he will choose. But I’ll tell you this, you are on my list of people who I do want to bring to Uprising. But with him having the first picks, I can guarantee nothing. If I have my way about it, you have my word that I’ll be bringing you to my show.
Luci nodded, a soft smile on her face.
Luci: Thank you, Mr. Kincaid. I know you can’t promise anything more than that, and that’s fine.
Cody: What was the second thing you wanted to mention, Vincent?
Vincent: Ahh, that would be the next step in Luci’s ascent through the ranks of SVW. This is, of course, predicated on you drafting her. But we’d like to toss her name into the Defiance division.
Cody nodded as he listened.
Cody: I would have zero problems with that. But let’s just wait and see how the draft comes out. If I manage to get her for Uprising, I’ll give her an opportunity to climb the ladder as soon as I know exactly what I have to work with in terms of roster. How’s that?
Luci: Much appreciated. I have had...a better beginning to my time in SVW than I would have expected, but the time has come for me to move past the Pride Division, hope that Miss. Pike does well with the championship and move on to something else. I do not see myself as someone with the pace to keep up with the Adrenaline division nor have the...enjoyment of foreign objects to take part in the Chaos Division. And I wouldn’t dare punch above my weight.
Vincent: I cannot put into words the anxiety I would feel with Luci in the Chaos division. I am very happy she has chosen the Defiance. And I hope you do manage to draft her. I’m positive she would give Linda Ragnal or anyone else a stern challenge, even including the ...Fat Cheetah himself.
Cody: I’m sure she would too. I think Paul qualifies as a ‘next level challenge’ for pretty much anyone. That’s a long night for anyone trying to bring him down, much less take the title.
Luci: There’s an argument that Paul James would be a next level challenge even when his time comes to take the SVW Championship division. A man that size should never be so fast.
Cody: Well let’s see how the title match shakes out, and the draft after that. Maybe you’ll climb up to be the next one to test him or Linda.
Vincent gives Cody another handshake before we head elsewhere.
